Ideas for PROPOSING near Portland
Updated: Apr 3, 2019
The typical places in Portland for proposing are the Portland Japanese Garden, Willamette Wine Country, Multnomah Falls, and Mount Tabor Park. If you DON'T want typical, this list is for you.
Up, Up & Away; Nothing says romance like being swooped off your feet by a helicopter. (They don’t do this on EVERY SEASON of The Bachelor for no reason.) They have a city lights tour, a romantic date option and others to choose from!
If you’re both the outdoors type, Mt. Hood might be the perfect place to propose. Tell him/her you’ve planned a get-away and pop the question in front of the fireplace in your own cabin. Clear Lake Cabin Lookout is an active-duty Forest Service fire lookout available for rent in the fall and winter. The cabin sits atop a forty foot tower that you get to after a four mile snowshoe, snowmobile or ski journey. He/She will have no idea what’s in store. Another option is Cascade Huts stocked with a propane heater and stove, utensils and sleeping bags with pads. Of course if both of those options sound like too much work, Timberline Lodge is always the good old stand by. For the couple that enjoys nature AND amenities: Book a night at this treehouse with a view on Airbnb.
For the couple that loves beer: Stay at this Airbnb downtown just blocks from the breweries and restaurants of downtown Hood River (including Full Sail.) Head out to eat at Celilo for Willapa Bay oysters, pan seared Pacific coho or braised pork shoulder with pasta. Don’t forget to make reservations in advance for the best seat in the house. Let them know your plans.
PICNIC: If Summer or Fall is the time of year you want to propose, the weather tends to be a bit more predictable around this part of the country so plan an old fashioned picnic stepped up a notch. First, buy or borrow a cute picnic basket (this matters...hello photo opp. when you announce the big news) Next, visit one of two locations of The Meadow to pick up some gourmet chocolate, wine and flowers. Don’t forget a pinch of specialty salts from around the world; it will impress her. Next head over to New Seasons to buy the main entree’s and sides from the Deli to pack in your basket. Don’t forget to hide the ring somewhere safe that you can pull out at just the right time. Now...WHERE to have your picnic... make it a place special to both of you that has history and meaning! It would be even cooler if you had a bag packed for your partner without them knowing and you followed up your picnic with a surprise night at the treehouse Airbnb listed above or a night at a hotel at the coast.
LODGE IN THE WILDERNESS: If you are the outdoor type, I am so completely crushing on this Swedish Riverfront Lodge. I mean…so romantic, and bonus points that you can take a 3-D tour of it before deciding to rent it! It sits on 24 private acres of protected wilderness and was featured in Portland Monthly magazine as one of the best “Secret Mount Hood Hideouts.” Discover wonderful trails for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, making it feel like your own private ski resort.
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum is a glass and timber building honored by the American Institute of Architects. It has interactive displays and artifacts from the area's original residents over 11,000 years ago. Walk the nature trail and propose on the 54 acre grounds where you can spot bald eagles and greenery galore. Book a room at the Columbia River Gorge Hotel perched atop the majestic cliffs of the Columbia River, Have dinner at the award-winning Simon's Restaurant, and book spa treatments at Spa Remedease.
