Window Film WITHOUT adhesive...works with just static cling and is easy to put up.

This solution gives you privacy with none of the dusting (blinds!). It has a modern and minimalist aesthetic, and if it's in your primary bathroom, air plants LOVE IT!

an example of what window film looks like
Just the lower window with window film gives all the natural light and just as much privacy on the top level of a home. Plus, air plants love the muted light and humidity!

Living in SE Portland, we know how precious natural light is when it finally decides to grace us with her glowy presence. So the idea of covering up a window with bulky blinds or heavy curtains? Blasphemy. Enter: window film—my absolute favorite under-the-radar solution for privacy that doesn't mess with the light. Cue angelic choir.

What Even Is Window Film?

Let me introduce you to window film without adhesive—also known as static cling window film. It's like the clingy ex of your design dreams: easy to put up, no commitment, no residue, and when you're ready for a change? You just peel it off and go about your design life.

This isn’t the shiny, frosted mess from your grandma’s basement windows. This is modern, minimalist, and magic. Think clean lines, no cords, no dust (sorry, blinds—you’re cute but high maintenance), and bonus: air plants are obsessed with it. Seriously. If you're putting this in your master bathroom, your little floating green friends will thank you with new pups in no time.

The Case for Window Film in SE Portland Homes

1. We crave light like it’s coffee. And in the gray drizzle of Portland’s winters (and let’s be honest—springs and some of fall), every sliver of natural light matters. Window film diffuses light beautifully without darkening your space. You still get that soft glow without turning your home into a display box for the entire neighborhood to watch you do yoga in your pajamas.

2. We appreciate things that are easy. If I can avoid pulling out a drill or an allen wrench, yes please. Static cling window film takes less than an hour to install. You cut it, spray your window with water, apply, and boom. Privacy. Light. Sanity. Here is a VIDEO I made on the installation process.

3. I appreciate a minimalist aesthetic. This isn’t a fussy look. Window film blends in, keeps your windows clean and open-looking, and doesn’t fight with your vintage credenza or artisan macramé wall hanging. It’s like the Scandinavian roommate you wish you had—tidy, tasteful, and respectful of your space.

Where to Use It

  • Bathroom windows: No more playing peekaboo with the neighbors.

  • Front doors with sidelights: Adds privacy without killing your entryway’s vibe.

  • Kitchen windows: Especially if you have open shelving nearby—no greasy fabric shades to worry about.

  • Nurseries or home offices: Soften harsh light while keeping things bright and happy.

  • Second-story windows that might have you looking down into your neighbor's home or 😩 ...gasp, bathroom (totally happened to me. I could see straight into their bathroom from our upstairs stairwell!)

Final Thoughts (and a little Designer pep talk)

Look, window film may not be the sexiest design element you'll ever install—but it's one of the most functional, affordable, and genuinely stylish solutions I recommend to clients all over SE Portland. Whether you're renovating your Craftsman in Sellwood, outfitting a Mid-century gem in Woodstock, or trying to make your rental in Hawthorne feel less fishbowl-y, this is a designer-approved hack that just works.

And best of all? No blinds to dust. 🙌 No color choices to make.  🙌

So, if you love your light but also enjoy privacy—give window film a try. Your air plants will thrive. Your bathroom will feel like a spa. And you? You’ll feel like the genius designer you are.
